When people talk about pregnancy, they often use special ways to describe it. Instead of saying “someone is going to have a baby,” they might use words that help us picture it better. These are called metaphors. A metaphor says something is something else, but it doesn’t mean it in a real way. For example, someone might say “She’s got a bun in the oven.” That doesn’t mean there is bread cooking, but it helps people understand that someone is expecting a baby.
Metaphors help make speaking and writing more fun. They can show feelings or ideas in a clearer way. In this article, we will look at different metaphors people use when talking about pregnancy. You may hear some of these in books, movies, or even from friends and family. Let’s look at these phrases and see what they really mean.

Reading Passage
It was almost Valentine’s Day, and Mrs. Carter’s fifth-grade class was full of excitement. Everyone was making cards and decorating the classroom. But there was one thing more exciting than the party Mrs. Carter had a bun in the oven!
She told the class she was growing a tiny human and that her baby bump was getting bigger each week. “There’s a little passenger in here,” she said, smiling and rubbing her belly. Everyone giggled when she said the stork would be visiting in spring.
During art time, she said, “This belly is full of life and love.” The class drew pictures of baby onesies and wrote notes for the future little one. “I’m waiting for my bundle of joy,” she added. Then she whispered, “Don’t worry, I’m not about to pop just yet!”
At lunch, Ava said, “It’s so cool Mrs. Carter is carrying precious cargo.” Jacob replied, “Yep, she’s a mama in the making.” When the bell rang, Mrs. Carter said, “Alright class, I’ll see you tomorrow. Me and my little miracle need some rest!”
