Reading Passage
It was the day of the school picnic. Jamie packed her backpack with snacks and sunscreen. As she zipped it shut, she glanced over at her best friend, Maya, who was skipping down the sidewalk. Maya’s brown eyes were like toasted marshmallows soft and friendly.
When they reached the park, they found a shady spot under a tree. Maya’s eyes sparkled like a chocolate fountain when she laughed at Jamie’s jokes. Later, during the nature walk, Jamie told Maya that her eyes reminded her of autumn leaves, full of color and peace.
As they made s’mores, the firelight made Maya’s eyes glow like a toasty campfire. “Your eyes look like melted chocolate,” Jamie said while roasting her marshmallow. Maya smiled. “Yours look like brown sugar cubes small and sweet,” she replied.
They sat on the grass, watching clouds drift by. Maya’s eyes, Jamie thought, were as deep as a mud puddle after rain still and calm. As the sun began to set, her friend’s eyes looked like caramel swirls in the golden light.
The teacher called everyone for a group photo. Maya stood beside Jamie, her eyes now looking like warm toast simple, happy, and safe.
